Lactopead is a digestive supplement that aids in digestion of lactose in milk and dairy products. The active ingredient is lactase enzyme that occurs naturally within the small Intestines.
Lactose is a disaccharide consisting of two monosaccharides, glucose and galactose linked together via a glycosidic bond. Lactase enzymes catalyses the hydrolysis of the glycosidic bond releasing glucose and galactose which are the absorbable components in the small intestines.
40% of individuals produce little or no lactase enzyme in their small intestines. When unhydrolyzed lactose gets into the large intestines, it leads to increased osmotic potential thus drawing water into the intestinal space. This results into diarrhoea. The fermentation of this lactose in the large intestines causes production and accumulation of gas. These two symptoms characterises lactose intolerance.
Lactopead is proven to reduce baby’s symptoms of lactose intolerance. It is recommended if the baby shows symptoms of excess gas, bloating, abdominal discomfort, excess crying or diarrhoea.
Breast milk
- Express a few tablespoons of breastmilk into a sterilized container
- Add four drops of lactopead
- Give mixture to the infant on a spoon or oral syringe before initiating breast feeding
- Breast feed as normal
Animal milk and formula
- . Put animal milk or prepared formula into a sterilized container
- Add four drops of lactopead to warm (not hot) milk or formula
- Wait 30 minutes shaking the formula/milk occasionally and then feed your infant as normal
You can test whether the baby’s system has matured sufficiently by gradually reducing the number of lactopead drops used per feed. If symptoms return, simply increase the lactopead dose and try again later.
Lactopead drops are safe from birth. If you place the drops directly into the baby’s mouth. they won’t cause harm. However, the enzymes would be damaged by the PH levels in the mouth and stomach reducing the effectiveness.
Lactase enzyme is not absorbed by the body.
Lactase enzyme is destroyed by high heat. It works best in warm milk/formula.
Do not boil milk with lactase drops already mixed in with the milk. Equally, freezing the product will destroy the enzyme.
